How counselling helps you during fertility treatments.

In an ideal world, psychological support should be available for everybody who undergoes fertility treatment. However, these days it is not always the standard.

In my opinion, support should be included in every fertility treatment. The reason being that when you and partner decide to start fertility treatment, a whole new world opens up to you as a couple. This is a world that you will not be familiar with.

Fertility treatments ask a lot from you and your partner. You need to visit the hospital or clinic several times a week. As a result, you need to be absent from work more often. Questions you might have are “How do I discuss this with my boss?” or “what do I say when colleagues ask me where I am?” Fertility treatments become a big part of your life.

Also, starting medication and injections should not be underestimated. Every medicine has side effects. There can be mood swings, headaches, hot flashes and so many others. On top of this, you or your partner may need to inject yourself with the medication, there is always a risk of multiple pregnancies and there will be a lot of decisions you will need to make as a couple. These decisions can be difficult.

Emotions such as hopes, disappointments and feelings of stress are normal in this process. Every treatment cycle can give you hope but a failed cycle brings disappointment. Intercourse becomes scheduled and you focus more on the goal of getting pregnant rather than intimacy or pleasure. This can be a really stressful experience.

Overall fertility treatments are uncontrollable and the outcome is always uncertain. This brings high levels of stress, meaning physiological support is highly recommended. Ideally, you should start counselling before the treatment has started. Counselling can help you and your partner in so many different ways during your fertility treatment. For example, counselling can help you deal with all of the hopes and disappointments discussed above.
